No disrespect intended for slugs ……….. They are, after all, creatures that were made by God. Though I am sure there is a perfectly logical reason for their existence, I find them slimy and repulsive nonetheless.

While on the subject of repulsiveness, I would like to comment on a discussion that has been circulating in the church. It is the idea that all people, including Christians, are unworthy, vile creatures deserving nothing but displeasure from God. I believe it is true that there is an evil core in all people which causes them to bend toward sin and that outside of God’s intervention we are all destined for destruction.

But what about a believer? Is a redeemed Christian incapable of doing anything good?

Though mankind has strayed from God’s original plan, there are still redeemable qualities within us. Otherwise why would Christ have come? We were all made in the image of God and therefore possess inherently noble characteristics, though they may be hidden and corrupted by sin.

Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)

10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

I quote David Qaoud from his site Gospel Relevance in an article entitled, “Why your deeds are not like filthy rags.” –

One of the most misused, misquoted, and misunderstood Scriptures in the Bible comes from Isaiah 64:6, where Isaiah writes, “We all have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment.”

Christian, your greatest works are not like filthy rags. In fact, God has prepared good works for you to walk into (Ephesians 2:10). It is true that we sin and stray and sometimes do things from impure motives, but our deeds can please God the Father.

Everything you do impacts the world. Why would God prepare “good works” for you to do if they weren’t ………… well, good works?

So, in my opinion, I am not a slug in my Father’s garden ………. and neither are you.

Although, I suppose even a slug was made for whatever good works God created him to do………..

Mugs up! Hope you have a great day!!
