To the best of my recollection the year was 1991. My son, Brad, was around 4 years old and he was highly enamored with Robin Hood. I thought it would be great fun to have a rope swing for him to play on. One of these days I’m going to have to stop listening to the side of my brain that thinks something would be “great fun.”
Our backyard took a steep dive downhill towards a creek so I built a platform about 5 feet high approximately 20 yards out and tied a heavy rope to a big oak limb. The end result was you started on ground level then swung out and landed on the platform. Then you could turn around and swing back. It all seemed harmless enough at the time.
Brad was quite the acrobat; he learned some amazing tricks for a four year old. Although it’s a little hard to explain, he had this one trick that didn’t involve the platform at all. He would get a good running start going away from the tree from which the rope swung; the force of the rope would pull him back around to the other side of the tree. While swinging he would spin around and land on his feet. I was quite impressed. I wanted to learn how to do that! So I practiced slowly until I got the hang of it.
One Saturday morning we were out swinging and I decided to do my newly learned trick. Only I spun a little too fast and lost track of where I was……eh, hem……..in relation to the tree. The next thing I knew I was out cold, laying on the ground. I had hit my head squarely against the tree. When I came to, Brad and Lydia, who was two at the time, were standing over me giggling, asking if I was okay.
They say you learn from your mistakes and I guess it’s so. Humiliation is a great teacher.
13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.
I don’t know how much wisdom I gained from that whack on the head. But I did get a helmet for Christmas that year from my oldest brother…………just in case I ran into any more trees.
So I lift the coffee mug today to all who at one time or another have sustained bruises to the head. Be humble my friends!
