If you type in the question, “Why do I feel irrelevant?” into your search engine, you’ll be astounded first of all at the number of people who feel that way, secondly at their reasons, and thirdly at the responses for how not to feel that way. The pages are pretty exhausting with reasons why people feel no relevance but they all basically boil down to this: they feel unloved and unappreciated.
The meaning of the word relevant as defined by the dictionary is this:
a. – relating to the subject at hand, pertinent to the situation
b. – having significant and demonstrable bearing on the matter at hand
c. – having social relevance
Today the word seems to be evolving more into c) – meaning “something that matters, something that has value and significance.” For example if you feel your existence doesn’t matter you might say you feel irrelevant. You might feel like you have nothing of value to contribute to society.
Originally, the word relevant came from the Latin word relevare which means …….. are you ready for this? – “to lift up or raising up,” as in lifting your eyes to see what is before you or raising the mug.
As defined by the original word, to be relevant is to be lifted up or raised up in the world, to be recognized and appreciated by those around you. It is also having the ability to lift your eyes and look inward at yourself and outward at the world and recognize the endless possibilities before you.
So many people seem to be living in limbo, waiting for God to show up, waiting for something dramatic to happen that will give them purpose and quantify their existence. Your existence itself makes you relevant. The very fact that you are on the earth living and breathing makes you relevant. How?
A man and a woman can have sex but they can’t make a baby. They can’t force conception, they can’t make a child grow in the womb ………. only God can. He is the only one who can originate life. If you exist, it is because God made you exist, therefore you automatically have significance and relevance.
You are not defined by what you have achieved or how much you earn or how much you know or by who you know. You are relevant because of who you are ……….. you.
If you are reading this, chances are you may be looking for relevance. You may or may not believe that God is real, so for me to quote scriptures from the Bible would probably do little to convince you. However, I’d be willing to bet that you’ve tried a lot of things in your life to find happiness, importance, and significance. So why not give God a chance? So I’ll throw out this verse and I only ask that you consider it.
Psalm 139:13-16 (ESV)
13 For you formed my inward parts;
you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Wonderful are your works;
my soul knows it very well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you,
when I was being made in secret,
intricately woven in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed substance;
in your book were written, every one of them,
the days that were formed for me,
when as yet there was none of them.
Here’s to discovering how relevant you are! Mugs up!!
