bday2When it comes to birthdays and babies, my girls get a little outlandish. They like to make a big splash; every event turns into a major production with special decorations, special food, etc. They search for unique ideas, even for the smallest details, staying up all hours of the night the evening before making sure everything is perfectly in place.

I have a name for that; I call it OC Lucy, my nickname for obsessive compulsive. (Sorry to all the Lucys of the world)

I tend to be of the persuasion of “Why not just do what is sufficient? Hmm? Hot dogs and beans are special, aren’t they? How about a Little Debbie cupcake with a candle on top? “He ain’t gonna remember none of dis nohow, he’s a baby ain’t he?”

There’s a name for that, grandpa; it’s called callous. He’ll only be this age once, so muff it and celebrate.

So, what does the Bible say about celebrating?

2 Samuel 6:21 (ESV)

21 And David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord, who chose me above your father and above all his house, to appoint me as prince over Israel, the people of the Lord—and I will celebrate before the Lord.

Romans 12:15 (NIV)

15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.

Hmmmmm ………. guess my girls are right. If it’s important for them to celebrate, then it should be important for me.

There’s a name for that; it’s called sympathetic.

synonyms: compassionate, caring, concerned

The Spanish word is simpático, but it means so much more than sympathetic in Spanish – it means friendly, nice, charming, likable, pleasant, congenial

Wow ………. likable ………… charming

When was the last time I was charming?

Being sympathetic means that when something is important to someone else, you forget about yourself. You feel their needs more than your own.

You can’t spend every day having parties on top of parties, otherwise nothing in the world would ever be accomplished. Which makes it all the more important to celebrate special occasions. When a birthday or a graduation or a wedding comes along, there is reason to rejoice, so I should rejoice. Even if to me it seems a little over the top, I should take off my grumpy pants and put on my boogie britches.

Let’s dance!!
