dropKeep your mind on the driving, keep your hands on the wheel, keep your snoopy eyes on the road ahead ………

Focus, focus, focus ………..

My daughter used to do this thing when I wasn’t paying attention to her. She would take two fingers and point them at my eyes and gradually move them to her eyes and say, “Focus! Dad!” It was her way of getting me to make eye contact.

I’m handicapped in two ways when it comes to focusing. Number one, I have a distractible mind. It doesn’t take much to make my mind wander. Sometimes if I’m quiet, my wife will ask, “What are you thinking about?” And I’ll respond, “Which thing do you want to hear about because there’s ten bouncing around upstairs?”

Then there’s the physical handicap …………. my eyesight. For most of my life I had perfect vision. If anything I was slightly farsighted. When I turned 40, that began to change. My ability to read and see things up close became a little less clear and by age 45 it was apparent that I needed glasses. A trip to the eye doctor confirmed my fears but he assured me that all I really needed was reading glasses. In the last ten years as I have aged, I’ve become more and more dependent on them.

Proverbs 4:20-27 NIV

20 My son, pay attention to what I say;
    turn your ear to my words.
21 Do not let them out of your sight,
    keep them within your heart;
22 for they are life to those who find them
    and health to one’s whole body.
23 Above all else, guard your heart,
    for everything you do flows from it.
24 Keep your mouth free of perversity;
    keep corrupt talk far from your lips.
25 Let your eyes look straight ahead;
    fix your gaze directly before you.
26 Give careful thought to the paths for your feet
    and be steadfast in all your ways.
27 Do not turn to the right or the left;
    keep your foot from evil.

It’s a lesson in anatomy. Here’s a list of the body parts mentioned or referred to in this section of Proverbs: ears, eyes, heart, whole body, mouth, feet. What the writer is saying is that every part of your body, from head to toe, wants to wander from the truth and chase after evil. It’s a constant battle to remain focused.

23 Above all else, guard your heart,
    for everything you do flows from it.

The hardest part of all ………. the thing that most influences everything else in your life ……… the heart. The writer is correct in warning about the ears and the eyes because they are the pathway to the heart. What is seen and heard goes quickly to the brain and into its memory bank. So be careful to guard what you hear and see.

Focus ….. keep your eyes looking ahead, pay attention to my words, don’t turn your feet to the right or left………

So many distractions, so many good things ………….. but are they truly beneficial? Do they really add value to my life or are they just filling up time?

Lord I pray this day that you will keep me focused on what is important, keeping my mind clear and my heart pure, not turning to the left or right but looking straight ahead.

I hope your mug is full and hot! Stay focused!
