When I was just a little boy, I would have dreams of flying ……. not in an airplane or jet, not in a balloon, not in a hang glider. No, in my dreams, I would be floating over the clouds and the treetops, just me with my arms outstretched. The fresh air would be blowing in my face and into my lungs as I soared across the horizon; the only sound was the rapid beating of my heart from the exultation of the beauty and freedom. The sense of peacefulness was so overwhelming it was almost too much for my little soul to bear. No barriers, nothing to hinder my direction, nothing but blue sky………

Then, suddenly, I would wake up ………… oh……..it was only a dream………

Some dreams you’re happy to be awakened from; others, like these, you wish would continue forever.

The color blue…….

In scripture blue is a color frequently associated with heavenly places, royalty, and the holiness of God. Whenever a person saw a vision of God or of heaven, the color blue, sapphire, or lapis lazuli is almost always mentioned.

This little story was actually not a dream; the men saw God and lived to tell about it. Note what they saw under him………

 Exodus 24:9-11

Moses and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and the seventy elders of Israel went up 10 and saw the God of Israel. Under his feet was something like a pavement made of lapis lazuli, as bright blue as the sky. 11 But God did not raise his hand against these leaders of the Israelites; they saw God, and they ate and drank.

Lapis lazuli is a deep blue semi-precious stone that has been prized since antiquity for its intense color.

At the end of the Middle Ages, lapis lazuli began to be exported to Europe, where it was ground into powder and made into ultramarine, the finest and most expensive of all blue pigments. It was used by the most important artists of the Renaissance and Baroque, including Masaccio, Perugino, Titian and Vermeer, and was often reserved for the clothing of the central figure of the painting, especially the Virgin Mary (Wikipedia)

When God created the blue sky, he gave us a tiny peek at the richness of his universe. If I had to choose a favorite color ……… I don’t know ……… it would be hard. I love red. Red gets me energized. But there is something about blue, something that makes me want to sit and be quiet, something that makes me wants to just gaze at it, treasure the moment, and dream of heaven…………

Today I raise the mug to the sky – Thank you God for the vivid shades of blue to love and appreciate and to give us hopes and dreams!
