I didn’t realize until it was too late………. after the ceremony……. after the cake………..on our honeymoon……… I discovered I had married a mutant…………. a mutant with motion sickness.

Dec 1962 I was almost 3 years old. I was sitting on a whirlybird; the harder you pump this beast the faster it spins round and around!

See, the really weird thing is, I grew up loving wild unnatural jolts to the body and fifty foot free-falls that thrust your stomach up into your throat. You know, like roller coasters and the wheelie at the county fair. Even as a kid in school, we had toys on the playground like the merry-go-round and the whirlybird. We’d get those things spinning so fast you couldn’t walk straight for an hour afterward.

It all came to an abrupt end on our honeymoon in the mountains……… I noticed it the first time I came around a hairpin curve driving like James Bond. I heard a moan from the right side of the car, “Did you say something dear?” Then I pulled over at one of those beautiful roadside vistas, flung the car door open, jumped out with my hands in the air and shouted, “Look at that fabulous view!” The mutant opened her door and threw up…………

Yes, life as I once knew it was over…… no more wild rides through the hills; no more roller coasters at amusement parks; oh and boats……… boats were definitely OFF the list.

Every once in a while, I would test to see if anything had changed. Like for example, the snorkeling tour I once booked for our family. How was I supposed to know that the captain would deliberately bounce the boat up and down ferociously as we crossed the waves?! Half of the passengers on board were suffering from the same mutation as my wife….eh, hem….motion sickness.

So what does this story have to do with life? Well…. I have a confession……. I’m a mutant too. For that matter, you’re a mutant; we’re all mutants. All of us have been changed from the original creatures that God intended us to be. We are now mutated forms, creatures that have been infused with sin. This mutation has caused grief for mankind since the days of Adam. Sin distorts and poisons all that it touches, leaving a wake of destruction behind.

So what are we to do? God’s plan has never changed; we are to put our faith in Jesus. He removes our sin and sinks it to the deepest part of the ocean, never to be found again. (Micah 7:18-19)

I don’t know exactly how or when, but the apostle Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians about a time, when we will all be changed back to our original design, a pure design, God’s design.

1 Corinthians 15:50-52

50 I declare to you, brothers and sisters, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. 51 Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— 52 in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.

I can’t wait for that “twinkling of the eye” moment when I will be changed back to the creature God intended me to be. The mutant will be no more!

Today’s mug is raised to all who pray for change in the world. Someday all will be made right!
